International Film Festival in Beirut 2011: a program marked by the Iranian cinema

The eleventh edition of the International Film Festival in Beirut, which runs from October 5 to 13, will be punctuated by the projection of nearly sixty seven films by directors from twenty nine countries. Back on programming this year, marked by the presence of six Iranian films.The International Film Festival will be inaugurated in Beirut on October 5 at the theater Caracalla Centre Ivoire, Horsh Tabet (and not in the Unesco Palace, whose hall is under construction), with the screening of "The Tree of Life" of Lebanese-American director Terrence Malick, who won the 2011 Palme d'Or for Best Film during the 64th Festival de Cannes in May. The films are then screened at the Empire cinema Sodeco. This year the jury will be chaired by Luca Guadagnino, Italian director whose last film released in 2010, Amore, met with a unanimous criticism and a Golden Globe nomination in 2011. The jury consists of Piccino Cristiana (Italian film critic) Karin Albou (actress, director and screenwriter French), Maysoon Pachachi (Iraqi producer and director) and Rajaa Al Sanea (Saudi writer, author of "Girl of Riyadh"). The International Film Festival in Beirut will close with the screening of "Melancholia," the latest film by Lars Von Trier released this year.
Colette Naufal, President of the International Film Festival in Beirut, said that the festival will present sixty-seven movies in seven different categories: "Feature film of the Middle East" (seven films), "Short film from the Middle East" ( sixteen films), "Documentary film in the Middle East" (eight films) and the sections out of competition "Panorama", "Film Short Film", "Film culinary" and "Children's film." She adds, "2011 was an exceptional year for the wealth of quality films, but unfortunately out of competition. This amounts to the fact that the production of film festivals is supported by the Gulf countries, which, therefore, hold the rights as to the previews of these films in the Middle East. " Colette Naufal continues: "Thus, we delay the dates for the 2012 festival until the lastWednesday of October to allow the competing of these films from the Middle East during our festival "
Strong presence of Iranian cinema
Fourteen Lebanese directors will participate in this festival marked by the presence of Iranian cinema through the presentation of films by Iranian directors six in all three competitions and the presence of Iraqi cinema through the films of five directors to the three Iraqi participant competitions. Four Kurdish filmmakers will participate in the International Film Festival in Beirut. During the festival, also a film will be screened in Bahrain and three film from the Maghreb, Egypt and Jordan will be, and honor.
The International Film Festival Beirut serves as a political tool to promote freedom of speech, a forum for dialogue, even as the Middle East is entering a new era with the revolutions that have affected several Arab countries.
