Montreal is still the cultural metropolis of the country? Do we have more than dance, theater, music than anywhere else in Canada? Are we still the "kings" of Canadian television? Toronto has she trumped?
It's true that we recently opened a large concert hall. This is also true that we produce more television than English Canada. Finally, it is true that we remain the hub for the production of television and film, as evidenced by the expansion that Mel Oppenheim and Michel Trudel will conduct the city's harbor.
But a true cultural metropolis must export. The Montreal Symphony Orchestra travel a little, our concepts of TV as well, but few of our original programming is broadcast on foreign branches, as more and more English-Canadian series break the big U.S. networks and foreign.
Obviously, more countries speak English and French and France, should be our main partner, not buyer. When she buys one of our series, it hastens to the caption, to double or to conduct a new production.
The obstinacy of Losique
From l959, passionate about cinema as Pierre Juneau, Rock Demers, Michel Brault and others founded the International Film Festival of Montreal. The festival falls stack, because under Duplessis, moviegoers have little choice and movies are always butchered by censorship.
As happens too often in Montreal, the founders do not form over and the festival wilts. In 1977, Serge Losique takes the ball and created the World Film Festival. The obstinacy of its founder made sure that the FFM is still alive, but his stubbornness also pass the event by reducing all kinds of tribulations.
At the same time in 1976, Bill Marshall, Van der Kolk and Dusty Cohl, other film buffs, based in Toronto "Festival of Festivals." Their humble beginnings were the laughing stock of Montrealers and Losique. For one, the Toronto event is irrelevant, since it has no competitive component!
FILMS IN OUR OWN FIRST ...
It takes only a few years for Toronto each fall became the venue of any film in the world. The International Film Festival Toronto its current name, ended last Sunday.
Were presented in 33 rooms over 300 films from 65 countries and it has attracted dozens of international stars. MONTREAL IS ALMOST FORGOT
A five-story building, the Bell Lightbox TIFF, home to five major theaters, museums, studios, a bistro, a restaurant and lounge, has become the "parent" of the festival. The Lightbox, which stands at the corner of King and John, is open all year. It takes about 4000 events that attract over one million people.
After Cannes, the film festival we are talking about the world is now that of Toronto. Montreal is only a "second thought"!
Good old Harold Greenberg
September 15, at TOHU of Montreal, was celebrated the 50th anniversary of Astral. A remarkable party where dozens of guests from the media ate and drank to the past and the future of this company, we became synonymous with "premium channels".
Astral, which ran first "concessions" in the pictures Miracle Mart stores, is part of its success to the vision of Ian Greenberg, CEO, and André Bureau, Chairman of the Board. André had first cut his teeth in the world of telecommunications as Chairman of the CRTC.
That evening, however, that my old friend Harold Greenberg I thought. Premature death at age 65, Harold was a crazy film and TV and it was his boldness to initiate such Astral career. In the early 70s, I had given Harold a lot of film equipment Onyx Films, a transaction that we sealed by a handshake! It was that kind of man.
