Information Technology: Challenges Abound In Spite of Efforts

Schools are yet to begin new syllabus though government has trained staff and created multimedia centres as strategies for effective take-off.
Innovations in general education have been made, and government is working hard to ensure the teaching of the subject in their schools is effective, but very few schools in the country appear eager to embrace the reforms. Information Technology is one of the subjects that the Ministry of Secondary Education has been working tooth and nail to ensure that it is introduced in schools to suit the changing times. Though challenges abound, efforts have been put in place to make sure that the teaching of Information Technology (IT) goes operational in schools in the country.
At the Ministry of Secondary Education in Yaounde, sources say trainers have been drilled on the use of IT. Another stride recorded is the creation of about 31 multimedia centres in the country. “Schools have computer rooms,” a source said while hinting that over 600 computers are being installed in schools nationwide. Notwithstanding, the Ministry of Secondary Education in collaboration with development partners like the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and other organisations that aim at implementing the use of Information and Communication Technologies in schools, have embarked on the construction of multimedia centres in the country.
As of now, only Lyceé Classique de Bafoussam, Lycée Bilingue de Bafoussam, Lycée Classique de Dschang, Lycée Bilingue de Garoua, Lycée Bilingue de Lagdo, Lycée Bilingue de Guider, College Moderne la Benoue, College Ste. Thérèse Garoua and Collège Protestant de Garoua, have introduced the teaching of the new subjects in their schools.
The situation remains worrisome to officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education. According to them, the learning of IT contributes to the amelioration of the quality of education as it is not only used as tool for the facilitation of cognitive development of learners, but also as a means of exposure to users. However, calls have been made for schools interested in the subject to indicate with the Ministry for measures to be put in place for the take-off of classes.

Sunday Night Thoughts: Why can not I love Metal Gear Solid?

What I will say is unlikely to be a little unpopular with some I do not like Metal Gear Solid.
But we understand: it is still a series that I respect. Simply put, despite the quality of games, I can not get used to it. Almost as if there's a little something that spoils a bit of my immersion in the game This thing is the gameplay. It's not bad, we can do things very friendly with Snake. But for a player like me, it smells hodgepodge of buttons to master and movements to know. In my opinion, this is not quite intuitive: in the episodes I played, although the beginnings of the adventure be smooth, I feel personally clueless after a while. Kind there is a guard who monitors a door, how to avoid it? Crawl quietly behind him? Throw a grenade as a big nag? The sleep? Something like that bothers me: in AMS, there are several ways to do something. It's almost discouraging.
So you always think that I am wrong because I am not able to cross the corridor without being spotted me and I do not know me master the weapons or hiding behind a wall and yada yada yada. No, the problem is different. My playing style is certainly not very subtle, but I feel almost ashamed not to know me properly use the weapons and strategies available to me. A bit ashamed as if I were the hero, Solid Snake, the only hope of saving our world a world war was based mechas I really know what ... It's a bit weird though: when he criticized the gameplay is so rich! It is a paradox, for sure, maybe my mind is that old crouton that resurfaces, contenting myself very well with two buttons on a joystick to enjoy playing ...
I even forgot to tell you about the events I played. We will act quickly, there are only two: MGS4 and MGS first name (downloaded via PSN). I am clear that this is the order that I played. In fact, I was never attracted AMS in the past, for some reason. Still keen on the PlayStation, not any episode interested me. But no really, what! Maybe I kept the bad memory of a demo of MGS1, not yet mastered the controls to finish the level. But I think I was a little too young for this kind of game .. Do not forget to mention SSBB with Snake as a playable character, but it did no more than that applied to get an episode of AMS.
There is the case MGS4, that I offered in Platinum Edition. Seeing a particular action / infiltration rate very random, I was not quite convinced. Gameplay rigid (in my opinion), IA doubtful, I went to the end of the game, but never be invaded by any passion.
And despite the mixed feelings frankly, there is the case MGS1. Nothing to do: I know that this game is ultra famous, but I am too ... closed. No way to enjoy play, and yet I am aware that this is a game damn well overall. Good story, colorful characters, different situations, perfect music ... everything is good in the pig! Except that damn gameplay that I can not get used.
Must believe that the games are not really undercover for me. No hard feelings, Snake ...

Third act for Rihanna and Eminem?

While she has just sent in his brand new radio single, "We Found Love", Rihanna was entrusted to the magazine "Rosebud" by issuing the possible overhaul of the duo singing "Love The Way You Lie" for a third act.
Rihanna recently recent magazine "Rosebud" (pictured) his desire to repeat the experience with rapper Eminem, convinced that he is "one of the best poets of our time" and saying they have talked about together. The evocation of this project is ultimately not surprising, since their first association giving rise to the title "Love The Way You Lie" was a success. The single, taken from the seventh studio album "Recovery" of the rapper, has brought the duo in the first position of the charts in many countries, like France, but also scored two acolytes on the Billboard Hot 100 on the top of the podium. The second fruit of their collaboration, he joined the fifth album "Loud" for the singer, released in 2010.

A robot could carry the Olympic Flame

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing, founder of computer science, a researcher suggested that the iCub robot is one of the torchbearers.
Le robot iCub (Sipa)
A robot has been nominated to carry the Olympic torch during the opening ceremony of the London Games in 2012, reported Tuesday, September 20th the New Scientist website.
The candidate is called iCub, a robot resembling a little boy, and equipped with artificial intelligence enabling it to learn from humans "like a child learning to walk," says New Scientist. Developed by a consortium of European universities, iCub is already able to crawl, archery and show facial expressions.
100 years of Alan Turing
It was Professor James Law, computer scientist at Aberystwyth University, which allowed the appointment of the robot through a partnership with one of the sponsors of the Olympics. According to him, this selection would be a way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing, British mathematician considered the inventor of computer science.
"A torchbearer robotics is a tribute to Alan Turing adequate, and an inspiration to future generations of scientists and engineers," argues Professor James Law. The chances qu'iCub is selected, however, remain limited.
Indeed, the regulations state that holders of the Olympic flame must be UK residents and more than 12 years. iCub being a robot, we would have an exemption, or a particularly flexible interpretation of the regulation.

Online players solve puzzles, an AIDS

Une séquence de jeu Foldit.
Player online gaming Foldit managed to find the structure of an enzyme linked to AIDS from monkeys in a few weeks. Scientists stumbled upon the puzzle for ten years.

Ten years that scientists looking for the real shape of an enzyme linked to AIDS in a type of monkey, the rhesus macaque. It only took three weeks to a team of players online to find the solution, which may lead to a significant research against AIDS in humans. A performance made possible by the serious game Foldit ("bend it" in English), developed by the departments of computer science and biochemistry at the University of Washington.
Proteins, which include enzymes, play a vital role in the human body. In the case of AIDS from monkeys, discovered the enzyme, type retroviral protease contributes to the spread of the virus within the body. To prevent such proliferation, scientists must know the actual structure in three dimensions, of this enzyme in order to create a drug that can stop it.
Although it is relatively easy to know the composition of a protein, it is much more difficult to know its shape in three dimensions. Proteins are composed of amino acids linked by peptide bonds said. These can rotate or bend, to give the protein its final form. The possible combinations are enormous. And computers used by scientists struggle to "guess" what combination is most effective.
Sharing human intelligenceThis is where online gambling is involved Foldit. Its creator, Seth Cooper, has gone from a simple observation. "People thinking skills in space much greater than that of computers," said he. Therefore, rather than consolidate the power of multiple computers to perform complex calculations, will share Foldit human brains with a video game.
The game then the players, individually or in teams, "crushing" the chains of amino acids of a protein to find its true virtual form, respecting the basic rules of chemistry. Initially, Foldit included only proteins whose actual shape was known to scientists. By manipulating these models in three dimensions by humans, the creators of the game trying to understand the mechanics of the human brain for reasoning in space. Data that could be exploited later to improve the capabilities of computers.

Nearly 240,000 people have played Foldit since its launch in 2008. And biochemists are not the most talented in this puzzle game. In 2008, Foldit players participated in an international competition of protein folding. And against all odds, these fans have held a candle to the scientists.
One of the most talented players he was only 13 years old at the time. When asked by researchers on reasoning to find the best combination, the latter merely shrugged his shoulders in response that it "seemed more like it," recalls Wired. "Fold is proof that a game can turn a novice into an expert," said Zoran Popovic, a professor of computer science at the University of Washington
A discovery published in NatureRecently, the creators of Foldit embarked on a new challenge: to floor the best players on the structure of proteins on which the scientific community stops. Thus the team "Contender", consisting of fifteen people, focused on the enzyme rhesus macaque. "Players have a variety of profiles, some work in computer science or the scientific community, but the best are out of it," said "Mimi," which belongs to the team Contender at MSNBC. "One of the main features of Folder is the instant chat feature, built into the game Contender members living in Canada, the United States, Europe and New Zealand, it was essential to communicate."
In ten days, players have found a probable structure of the enzyme. This response was forwarded to scientists, who refined over several days the model proposed by the players. Based on the ideas of these fans, they were able to find the exact model of the protein. This discovery led to an article published in the journal Nature. "We solved a small piece of the puzzle that will allow us to combat AIDS," says the author of the article, Firas Khatir, a biochemist at the University of Washington, MSNBC.
"The results released this week show that by combining gaming, and computer science, we arrive at the advances that were not previously possible," said Seth Cooper. For some scientists, experience shows that the game Foldit could revolutionize the way we teach math and science in school.

Meg Whitman takes the reins of HP

The Board of Directors of HP has landed on Thursday its chief executive, Leo Apotheker, after less than a year of service. The former boss of eBay, Meg Whitman, succeeded him. Meg Whitman is the new boss of Hewlett Packard. The board of directors of the first computer maker has landed Thursday its chief executive Leo Apotheker, after less than a year of service, replacing the former head of Ebay. Since last year, it was on the board of the world's number one computer.

"We're fortunate to have someone of the caliber of Meg Whitman, with his experience, to lead HP," said Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ray Lane, in a statement. "We are at a difficult time and we need a new management for the successful implementation of our strategy and exploit market opportunities."

Wednesday, the title of HP jumped more than 7% on Wall Street after several Anglo-Saxon media (AllThingsD, Reuters and Bloomberg) have in turn reported this information.

End of September 2010, HP had appointed to head the group Leo Apotheker, a former CEO of German software company SAP, to succeed Mark Hurd, who was ousted in an expense report inaccurate. The IT group has had seven different CEOs since 1999.

Cloud computing "French" whets the appetites

Un centre de serveurs informatiques dans la région parisienne en avril 2008.
135 million euros "in the cloud" reveals the daily Les Echos on Wednesday, the state will invest heavily in the project Andromeda, a company to be established on November 1 by bringing together a conglomerate Orange, Thales and Dassault systems with the aim of forming a French giant cloud computing. Also called "cloud computing" (cloud in English), cloud computing covers all services that are managed directly online, and not from software running on a workstation: e-mail services , word processing, database management ...

The industry heavyweights like Microsoft, Google and Amazon, already offer pallets of virtual services, for individuals but also businesses. For the latter, the interests are many: easy management - maintenance is ensured by their provider - economies of scale, ease of deployment ... on the lucrative niche of office, for example, Microsoft and Google compete in a market growing, with Google Docs and Office 365, launched last year.
SOVEREIGNTY OF DATA
But these remote services have their weaknesses, and assume that the particular customer abandons a portion of control over his computer. In sensitive areas such as defense or health, companies are reluctant to use services that make their data pass through servers in the United States or other countries. It is here that intends to use Andromeda to create a French giant capable of competing with U.S. companies.
The question is even more acute for the authorities. "The sovereignty of the data is a key point for the public players," explained Jerome Brown Tuesday, Vice President of Atos in the conference back to Microsoft France. The two companies have launched a partnership to offer a version of the government services of Microsoft Office 365, hosted by Atos - and thus in France. "The public needs the assurance that their data will not leave Europe, or better yet, the national territory. We often hear that these technologies do not interest the public sector is completely wrong, but must be able to meet their specific constraints. "
In other countries of the European Union, the constraints could tighten drastically: the Netherlands and are planning to ban outright the use of government online services run by U.S. companies. Indeed, recall Numerama, U.S. anti-terrorism legislation allows the government access to all data hosted by American companies.

POP Montreal Live: Arcade Fire, Karkwa and Kid Koala on the Festival Plaza

By Julie Ledoux.
To celebrate 10 years of music in Montreal, Pop Montreal team hit a home run with the arrival of the darlings of the city, Arcade Fire, for a free show, open to all.
The evening began in force while the Montreal DJ Kid Koala got the ball, dressed in koala ...! In fine style, he has warmed the huge crowd that waited in front of him Arcadi Fire. Electro-jazzy rhythms and samples of songs best known (White Stripes, Outkast, etc..) Kid Koala make one of the most respected DJ in Canada, with good reason.
Karkwa then stormed the stage at Place des Festivals, the second part of providing free outdoor entertainment. The five boys, who seemed rather exhausted, have chained the success of their two most recent albums - Volume du Vent and Les Chemins de Verre - which escape the fate, Marie you cry, The Paths of glass, Tinnitus, The Frost to finish in style with the pretty room not Forget. Despite a very low number of decibels (due to laws), Karkwa provided an excellent service, at the level of talent of the group, making a perfect bridge between the performance of Kid Koala and the Arcade Fire, all waiting for.
While a marquee movie told us the last few minutes that "Coming Soon: Arcade Fire", a trailer was passing, presenting film clips and music video of The Suburbs. Finally, the group - eight tentacles for the evening of September 22 - was brought, all smiles on stage. Rarely had they seen the singer and guitarist Win Butler as happy or at least smile.
With the room Ready to Start the crowd was conquered from the beginning of the performance of Arcade Fire. Then the group all wanted to see a string of successes of his three albums, Funeral, Neon Bible, The Suburbs, three masterpieces of indie-rock of Quebec. The spectators (100 000 according to POP Montreal) were eligible for Keep the Car Running, No Cars Go Haiti and the tragic, sung by Régine Chassagne, which itself has origins in Haiti. It should also mention that the show was punctuated by calls for solidarity with Haiti in Montreal. Arcade Fire Kanpai supports the body since its inception, he is helping the Haitian people. They also presented Dr. Paul Farmer, a strong presence in Haiti, whose story is told in the book Raise the mountains and Regine Chassagne which wrote the foreword.
The group has already won a Grammy for his album The Suburbs, which has just won the Polaris Prize, continued its momentum with the Modern Man, Rococo, and even the new song Speaking in Tongues. The public, who continued to drink parts of Montreal group, also had the right to intervention, the album Neon Bible, and Wake Up Neighborhood # 2 (Laika), from their first album, Funeral, and The Suburbs and Empty Room, from the album The Suburbs. And it was not all! Members of Arcade Fire have been very generous, offering more 1:30 show, complete with video projections, which, in period films were grafted images of the show.
The group no end to stuff his music fans as they have chained the Neighborhood # 1 (Tunnels), We Used to Wait and Neighborhood # 3 (Power Out). Far from over, the show concluded with a reminder of two parts inflamed or Rebellion (Lies) taken from Funeral and Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains), sung by Régine Chassagne, who had changed red suit with long fringes. Flamboyant. It is clear that the group that ended his world tour in Montreal had much to celebrate! Prices accumulate, humanitarian projects too, and love is still in the public meeting. Impossible to lose this love, if the group continues on this path, offering blistering performance as that to which we got last night on the Place des Festivals.
